Chapter 6:
Rose asks Headmistress Kirova if she could attend church for her "religious needs". Of course, with Rose always having an interior motive, only wants to go to church to spy on Lissa and Christian more closely.

She hears the priest lecture on about St. Vladimir and his legacy but her mind is sort of at a distance - that is until this gets her complete attention: "...and so it was with shadow-kissed Anna."

The word "shadow-kissed" intrigues her enough to ask the priest, in which he gives her a book to read and study on, much to Rose's annoyance.

More juicy gossip spreads at the academy about a guardian wanting to resign to marry another guardian. This leads to an explanation about the Dhampir and Moroi arrangement. Dhampirs couldn't reproduce with each other or with humans, but they could reproduce with Moroi. Dhampir + Moroi would make another Dhampir (half human, half vampire). It explains why Moroi have to stay close with Dhampirs and more in-depth about dhampirs who choose to become guardians, blood whores, or single parents.

Rose almost gets caught in another altercation with Mia before Lissa pulls her off. They head back to the dorm where Rose sees Mason waiting for her. He says he has something on Mia in which Rose spits it out of him by turning on her charm. Mason, being unable to resist, reveals that Mia isn't royal *gasp*

Rose and Mason try to dig deeper into the meaning of "shadow-kissed" and what it means to be "bound together and always know what is in his heart and mind". Things haven't started clicking yet for Rose. We'll see in the next upcoming chapters!

Chapter 7:
Right around the beginning is another scene where Rose meets up with Dimitri for practice - or more like Rose running laps while Dimitri listens to 80s music. Dimitri quizzes Rose on what to do in real life scenarios when encountering a Strigoi. Her plans of staking him, cutting his head off, or setting the Strigoi on fire won't exactly work considering she has no weapon to begin with. So what does Dimitri tell her to do? Run.

Suddenly Rose gets a terrifying and painful vision coming from Lissa's head. She sprints to the dorms to find her completely distraught and in tears, but safe from harm. The reason being is because of a dead fox lying on Lissa's bed with its throat slit open, blood spilling the sheets.

Lissa so badly wanted to save it. Rose tries to calm her down and say that everything's going to be okay. Dimitri confronts Rose on anything she might know about who could have done this. After all, they are both on the same page of wanting to protect Lissa. Rose snaps at Dimitri and realizes at that moment that she has never been more determined to learn how to fight and defend for Lissa.

Chapter 8:
Fueled by her anger and need to protect Lissa after the fox incident, Rose steps up her game in training. We start to see a spark of that guardian fire in her and in that instance we know there is no one better to guard Princess Vasilisa than Rose Hathaway. She will do anything to protect her best friend, lost days of training be damned.
The fox incident left Lissa in a very fragile emotional state that seemed to get worse as people (namely, Mia.) made her life a living hell around St. Vlads, and subsequently making Rose very, VERY upset in a much different way.
We've got to be honest here- the highlight of this chapter for us was most definitely Christian Ozera. In this chapter we get to see him step out from the shadows and become a much more fascinating and versatile character. After Ralf's insults to Lissa and Rose, Christian sets him on fire which is a reaaaaally big deal amongst the Moroi culture. Moroi's don't use their magic against others. In fact, most don't even know how to use it offensively. While controversial, this is where we start to get those "Christian is meant to be with Lissa, Rose! he wants to protect her as much as you do, how do you not see it?!" feels.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 9:
Going against her better judgement Rose steps into Lissa's mind voluntarily to make sure she's okay. She soon finds that Lissa is in the chapel with none other than Christian Ozera, whom she asked her to stay away from.
Soon enough Lissa starts telling Christian how wrong it was of him to use his fire magic against another person because he could've harmed someone. Christian brings up that Moroi used to use Magic all the time to fight alongside their guardians instead of cowering and being fragile as they do now, but they eventually got scared and most forgot their spells, though not his family. In this chapter we get to see just how alike they are and how much they get one another.
And then there's some Rose and Jesse Zeklos action -
which, sure, is pretty hot but our favorite bit here was without a doubt our look at an Angry Dimitri as he pulls Jesse away.
"If I ever see you like this again, I will be the one to punish you. And it will hurt. A lot. Do you understand?"
and wait- doesn't end there. Here we start seeing that Rose's crush may not be that one sided after all. But of course, Dimitri's everlasting composure returns as quickly as it left. He tells Rose that she's not like a human or Moroi teenage girl- that in less than a year she'll have someones life in her hands. The realization hits Rose like a ton of bricks and Dimitri offers up to teach her how to fight- for real, but only if she's dedicated and stops getting distracted by petty insignificant things. Rose quickly accepts and extra trainings are set by Dimitri.

Chapter 10

In a flashback we get to see a bit more of what happened two years ago when the girls ran away from St. Vladimirs. In the flashback Rose and Lissa run into Sonya Karp, a teacher at St. Vlads at the time who was believed to be insane. Lissa steps to touch an injured raven that appears to be dead when suddenly a weird sensation floods through Rose via Lissa and suddenly the Raven moves and flies away, as if it were never dead/injured.

Rose and Lissa are left speechless not knowing what happened when suddenly things get a bit weird as Sonya Karp asks them to promise them they won't tell anyone about what happened, and asks Rose to "never let [Lissa] do it again. They'll try to find you. You can't let her do it. Not ever again."
