On Set Interview with Vampire Academy Producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford

Fangirlishness, Hypable, and PagetoPremiere interviewed Producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford on the set of Vampire Academy:

Let’s start with you and your involvement and why you wanted to option it?
Don Murphy: Susan and I had been working with a guy named Mike Preger who is one of the producers, he’s based in Florida, on a project…
Susan Montford: On a modern day version of Day of the Triffids.
Don: Yes, a modern day version of Day of the Triffids. It’s an old classic British Science Fiction Novel. He called us up one day and said I have another project that I want you to do based on a series of young adult books called Vampire Academy. I said, “Are you crazy? That sounds horrible.” (laughs) Our reaction was we already have a project, we don’t need any other projects, thanks. He was like No, No you gotta read it. He just kinda kept at it until we read it, and we kinda woke up in the middle of the third one and said this is amazing, we have to try to get involved with this. That started when we were on the set of Reel Steal a couple of years ago, a Hugh Jackman movie we did together. So we put together a real nice pitch book, sent it out to all the studios, the sales, synopsis, and why this is going to be the next big thing. They all said that we were crazy. But, considering that they said that about Transformer’s too, we didn’t listen to them.
Susan: They were also saying because Twilight existed there wasn’t a need to making it.
Don: Ah Vampires, vampires are done you know. We would go into meetings and say that the Twilight crowd is not 95 year old ladies, it was a different crowd.

Do you think it’s an integrity thing?
Don: No, I think they thought we already had the Vampire thing. The Vampire in the title didn’t help things.
Susan: The title was problematic.

What was the special thing that you saw in the books that made you want to take on the project?
Susan: They were really cheeky, also it was from a female perspective and there was also the bond between the two girls which was particularly engaging because you don’t see that too often. You really feel a strong understanding of a teenage girls mind. She’s like really, really devoted to her best friend and it was a really interesting angle rather than it being all about boys. We have got boys and all that stuff, but it’s really about the two girls.

It’s a beautiful cast isn’t it really?
Susan: It’s a wonderful cast.

What was the audition process like?
Susan: Well, we used Marci Liroff and a website, where we invited all to post their auditions and then we played through these relentlessly until we found the perfect cast. We’re pretty excited to making it.
Don: My answer to your other question, another attraction is what you are always looking for in a project, is that Richelle created such a mythology, such a world going on. It’s rare that you are like, Wow, I wanna know what’s next, what happens in that world.

Danila Kozlovsky Interviewed on The Main Role

Vampire Academy mentions:

Let’s be specific. There is a choice: on one hand there is “Vampire Academy”, certainly very interesting, a new project which gives you great opportunities. But on the other hand, there is a new, more significant role in the theatre. I can just call the name “Lopakhin” in Cherry Garden. Could you solve the problem?
I finished shooting for “Vampire Academy” this summer, and now I begin to rehearse for the role of Lopakhin. Time of rehearsing for “Cherry Garden” is February inclusive. Except for one week, when I go to Hollywood on activities related to the premiere. The rest of the time I’ll be focused on performances, because, firstly, it is “Cherry Garden” by Chekhov, and secondly, this is the staging of Lev Abramovich. I can’t share this time with another project. Therefore, I will be focused on “Cherry Garden” completely.

I remind our viewers that the excellent team of the old and new generations of the MDT Theater will play with Danila in this performance. Those are Ksenia Rappoport (Ranevskaya) and Liza Boyarskaya (Varya), and many others. But the question arises: do you have a fantastic sense of humor that you can “jump” from the image of Dimitri Belikov (I think that’s the name of your character in this vampiric story) into a much more serious and complex image of Lopakhin.
I didn’t understand why “sense of humor”?

Of course. I just don’t know how I can relate to this story differently. I don’t know the creativity of Richelle Mead, who invented the whole story.
I caught some polite and delicate irony in your words in relation to “Vampire Academy”. I want to clarify that certainly it is difficult to put “Vampire Academy” in one row with “Cherry Garden” by Chekhov. But this is so not because it is worse or better, but because they are fundamentally different genres. But “Vampire Academy” is a very interesting, fascinating and an interesting literature in its genre and its category. 35 million followers worldwide and on the toplist of the “New York Times” confirm this fact. And Richelle herself is very sweet and an interesting person. I managed to communicate with her during the filming. I only regret that it was so little. And this experience is very interesting for me as my first experience in Hollywood, but a totally different one. My profession is interesting because today I play the role of a dhampir from the new created world of a modern writer, and tomorrow I’m flying to Russia to concentrate on the role of Lopakhin. This is a unique opportunity. “Fantastic sense of humor” (as you said) means nothing. It’s just my professional happiness.

A Message from Vampire Academy Producer Mike Preger Regarding the Film's Work in Progress

Posted on the Official Vampire Academy Movie Facebook:

Ok people, let’s all take a deep breath and catch up on a few things. It’s been awhile since I’ve reached out to the fans directly, and was hoping to get in a few words about what’s been happening and where things are going from here.

First off, the exciting news is we are now in the final stages of finishing the film for it’s worldwide opening this coming February. To explain how this process works, this is what goes on. We have spent the last month, or so, conducting select private screenings of the nearly completed work to random audiences of film fans around the country. This group is comprised of both hard core book fans of the series, as well as the general audience of film fans from all demographics. The reason for this process is to allow the film makers to understand how the general film audiences are reacting to the picture. The questions that are asked after the screenings include, do they understand the story, do they like, or dislike the characters. Do the hard core fans believe we have been faithful to the books, and for those who have never read, or even heard about the series, do they find the film interesting and entertaining.
