Short Interview (In Russian) HERE

(Translated Interview)
You took part in “Vampire Academy”. The blockbuster which will be released very soon. What are your impressions from the American film production?
It is a powerful industry, professional and very talented. This is one of the superpowers in the cinema world. Americans produce a tremendous amount of good films and TV series every year. But half of them doesn’t reach us, unfortunately. The experience was, for me, not simple in many aspects because it was still my first role in English. I relaxed only when i was alone at the hotel. But I had to prepare for the next day of filming. Our shooting lasted for twelve, sometimes fourteen hours a day for a few months. But it was an absolutely amazing experience in all aspects: in the professional sense and in dealing with wonderful actors and filmmakers.

Moviefone's Exclusive Interview with Richelle Mead on the 'Vampire Academy' Movie Adaptation + 'Bloodlines' Cover

Moviefone: Tell us about how your books made the transition from page to screen. What was the process like for you?
Richelle Mead: It moved pretty slowly at the beginning. It actually took a while to get any interest in the options, and I think it's because "Vampire Academy" came out during such a big heyday of vampires, especially with "Twilight" overshadowing everything. I think that made some people hesitant to get on board with that. Then in 2010, Mike Preger from Preger Entertainment was working with [producer] Don Murphy, who's famous for the "Transformers" movies, and they fell in love with the books and were tenacious about taking the books to studios... It took a couple of years -- because again, "Twilight" -- but they caught the interest of Daniel Waters, who wrote the screenplay for "Heathers," and Mark Waters his brother, who directed "Mean Girls."

How fitting is it that the director and screenwriter have this great pedigree with movies set in high schools?
I feel super lucky that they made the movie. I find sometimes that with book-to-movie adaptations there's so much focus on plot or action that you lose the characters. I think that's why a lot of these adaptations don't do so well. With my books, the characters are my goal. Of course the plot is too, but I'm trying to convey these emotions and these people to my readers. Both of them, Daniel and Mark, they both got that. Daniel wrote that into the script, the way the characters interact, their lines, their personalities really come through. That was what I loved about them doing the movie.

I know you didn't write with specific actors in mind, but does the cast match what you think the characters look like?
The leads are so spot-on with what I had in my head. Dimitri especially is a great choice; I love that they cast a Russian actor to play him. It's perfect; we're going to have a genuine accent. He's the real deal. He's so very handsome, but he's also so nice. It's easy to forget he turns into this hard, bad-ass warrior guy on screen, because when you're hanging out with him off-camera, he's so personable and sweet to everyone.

Danila Kozlovsky Interview on the Set of Vampire Academy

Q: Can we start with a basic introduction to your character and how you fit into the story?
Danila: My character, Dmitri. He’s a Russian first of all, but he has been living and working in America for a long time. I would say he’s Russian – he has a Russian character – Russian heart, Russian soul. For me Dmitri is a mystery person, mystery character. Do you know what I mean? Because he is listening to old music for example. He is reading cowboy books, he is wearing long trench coat. I would say he has old soul. But he is 24 years old, he is very young man. His mystery is very attractive to me. Very attractive, but not for me only.

Q: Dmitri is a self composed character, but underneath he has so many layers and so many things that Rose uncovers and things like that. I wanted to see for you – what did you take from your previous work that you applied to your role as Dmitri?
Danila: Good question. Dmitri is almost perfect. It’s quite hard to be like Dmitri. So if I say I am like Dmitri I would not be humble. Cause unfortunately I am not a Dmitri, but I promise I will try to be more Dmitri in the future.

Q: How do you differ from him?
Danila: How do I differ?

Q: I mean other than the fact you are not a vampire.
Danila: Ya, of course. This is the main difference by the way. He is calm. He is very smart. He is clever. He is wise. He is wise, but he is only 24 years old.

Q: A lot of knowledge and experience.
Danila: Ya, absolutely. I think, I hope I have something in common with him.
