Did We Mention We Were on Vampire Academy Set the Day Richelle Mead Filmed Her Cameo?

It was revealed last week that Richelle Mead has a cameo in Vampire Academy. As you can tell by the picture above – she’s a teacher at St. Vlad’s.

We were on set with Hypable and Page to Premiere when she filmed her cameo. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, we can tell you what she had to say about her cameo…

Q: We saw you got to play a little cameo earlier. How was that? What was the story behind that?

Richelle: It was Marks suggestion. I just did a walk through. I was a teacher walking through the halls, just before some action. It was fun. You know, it was nothing. It was a walk on for me and there was still so much work that goes into that. They take take after take, after take… and they do every angle.

Q: You are worn out by the end of it.
Richelle: And I think how are they doing it. They aren’t just walking, they are talking and they are doing this for… I mean this was a six day work week and they are going all night and it blows my mind. The amount of time to get one minute of footage. That’s five hours of filming. It’s crazy.

Q: It’s not the start of a new career as an actor.
Richelle: No. I am going to go home and go back to my writing.

Q: You aren’t the new Stan Lee or something. Write a little bit, film a cameo…
Richelle: Oh that’s right. If they can find roles creative for me as they have found for Stan we will see.

On Set Interview with Vampire Academy Producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford

Fangirlishness, Hypable, and PagetoPremiere interviewed Producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford on the set of Vampire Academy:

Let’s start with you and your involvement and why you wanted to option it?

Don Murphy: Susan and I had been working with a guy named Mike Preger who is one of the producers, he’s based in Florida, on a project…

Susan Montford: On a modern day version of Day of the Triffids.

Don: Yes, a modern day version of Day of the Triffids. It’s an old classic British Science Fiction Novel. He called us up one day and said I have another project that I want you to do based on a series of young adult books called Vampire Academy. I said, “Are you crazy? That sounds horrible.” (laughs) Our reaction was we already have a project, we don’t need any other projects, thanks. He was like No, No you gotta read it. He just kinda kept at it until we read it, and we kinda woke up in the middle of the third one and said this is amazing, we have to try to get involved with this. That started when we were on the set of Reel Steal a couple of years ago, a Hugh Jackman movie we did together. So we put together a real nice pitch book, sent it out to all the studios, the sales, synopsis, and why this is going to be the next big thing. They all said that we were crazy. But, considering that they said that about Transformer’s too, we didn’t listen to them.

Susan: They were also saying because Twilight existed there wasn’t a need to making it.

Don: Ah Vampires, vampires are done you know. We would go into meetings and say that the Twilight crowd is not 95 year old ladies, it was a different crowd.

Do you think it’s an integrity thing?

Don: No, I think they thought we already had the Vampire thing. The Vampire in the title didn’t help things.

Susan: The title was problematic.

What was the special thing that you saw in the books that made you want to take on the project?

Susan: They were really cheeky, also it was from a female perspective and there was also the bond between the two girls which was particularly engaging because you don’t see that too often. You really feel a strong understanding of a teenage girls mind. She’s like really, really devoted to her best friend and it was a really interesting angle rather than it being all about boys. We have got boys and all that stuff, but it’s really about the two girls.

It’s a beautiful cast isn’t it really?

Susan: It’s a wonderful cast.

What was the audition process like?

Susan: Well, we used Marci Liroff and a website, where we invited all to post their auditions and then we played through these relentlessly until we found the perfect cast. We’re pretty excited to making it.

Don: My answer to your other question, another attraction is what you are always looking for in a project, is that Richelle created such a mythology, such a world going on. It’s rare that you are like, Wow, I wanna know what’s next, what happens in that world.

Danila Kozlovsky Interview on the Set of Vampire Academy

Q: Can we start with a basic introduction to your character and how you fit into the story?

Danila: My character, Dmitri. He’s a Russian first of all, but he has been living and working in America for a long time. I would say he’s Russian – he has a Russian character – Russian heart, Russian soul. For me Dmitri is a mystery person, mystery character. Do you know what I mean? Because he is listening to old music for example. He is reading cowboy books, he is wearing long trench coat. I would say he has old soul. But he is 24 years old, he is very young man. His mystery is very attractive to me. Very attractive, but not for me only.

Q: Dmitri is a self composed character, but underneath he has so many layers and so many things that Rose uncovers and things like that. I wanted to see for you – what did you take from your previous work that you applied to your role as Dmitri?

Danila: Good question. Dmitri is almost perfect. It’s quite hard to be like Dmitri. So if I say I am like Dmitri I would not be humble. Cause unfortunately I am not a Dmitri, but I promise I will try to be more Dmitri in the future.

Q: How do you differ from him?

Danila: How do I differ?

Q: I mean other than the fact you are not a vampire.

Danila: Ya, of course. This is the main difference by the way. He is calm. He is very smart. He is clever. He is wise. He is wise, but he is only 24 years old.

Q: A lot of knowledge and experience.

Danila: Ya, absolutely. I think, I hope I have something in common with him.

Sarah Hyland Interview On the Set of 'Vampire Academy'

What was the casting process like for VA?

I’d gotten the script and I thought this was really cool and it’s a vampire film, and the character Natalie is pretty awesome with the way things turn out for her. So I Skyped with the casting director, and we put myself on tape through Skype and I thought this was weird because of the noise and the quality was just not good at all. So then Mark wanted to Skype with me, he was in London and I was filming ‘Bonnie & Clyde’, and I had someone from production come and help me set up a camera and she read with me while Mark observed and that was it. I didn’t read with anybody and there was no audition in person.

For the few people in the world who don’t know about Vampire Academy could you explain how your character fits into it?

My character is Natalie Dashkov, she is Victor Dashkov’s looney geeky crazy gossip loving daughter, so when Lissa and Rose escaped the Academy and are brought back they befriend her because they want to stay off the social network and clearly Natalie is not a part of that. So they befriend her, and that’s all I can really say.

What’s the scene that you’ve read in the book that you’re most excited to film?

I’ve already filmed the scenes that I was most looking forward to filming, but I can’t talk about that I’m sorry.

Your character sounds a lot different from what you’re usually playing, but just how are they different?

Natalie is very spastic, and geeky and just socially awkward and clearly Hayley (Modern Family) is none of those things. It was fun I found a lot of things to bring to Hayley, certain twitches that she has and just small character things that I don’t think anyone will notice but I had such a fun time with a character that Richelle has brilliantly thought up.

Hypable's Vampire Academy Set Visit Report + Recap from Fangirlishness

'Vampire Academy' set visit report - How mean can vampire girls be?

Earlier this year, Hypable visited the set of Vampire Academy for a behind the scenes look at the eagerly anticipated young adult novel-turned-movie arriving in 2014. This was our opportunity to speak to the cast and crew and find out for ourselves just how progress was going on one of our absolute favorite fandoms.

The cast were filming for a total of 8 weeks (in roughly 20 different locations), and we caught up with them on week 6 during an on-location set in the heart of London. The scenic University College London (UCL) provides the backdrop for St. Vladimir’s Academy and we were lucky enough to witness several scenes being filmed within this stunning atmosphere.

Although rarely illustrative when watching a movie for the first time, the filming process is repetitive and arduous; each scene is shot, and re-shot, and re-re-shot, then again in different camera angles. The mark of good filmmaking is attention to detail and the most striking impression we were left with after departing the set was the sheer meticulousness of every scene. The director, Mark Waters (Mean Girls), quite clearly has a very precise vision in bringing the story to life and that is to remain as loyal to Richelle Mead’s world as much as possible.

The Vampire Academy fandom is large, vibrant, enthusiastic and protective of the stories that they have taken to heart; the cast and crew seem all too aware of this and delivering a movie that above all else, is meaningful to the fandom community seems to be the overarching ambition of the team. This is an admirable endeavour and certainly left us feeling reassured.

Richelle Mead Shares Exclusive Pics from ‘Vampire Academy’ Set with Yahoo! Movies

"The cast was so friendly and outgoing, and within 15 minutes of me arriving, nearly all of them stopped by to say hello and introduce themselves," Mead said as she described the photos from her visit which she shared with Yahoo! Movies exclusively. "The picture of me with Zoey and Cameron [Monaghan] was taken on the first day of my set visit. They were filming in a university lecture hall, and I got to take a seat right there with the students."

"[This] photo was taken on the last day of my two-day visit," she recalled. "I didn't actually believe they'd have a chair for me since my visit was so short, but they did! It took a fair amount of searching for it (and all the other cast chairs) because the crew moved around filming that day and kept taking the chairs with them," she explained. "Finding this reward at the end of our 'scavenger hunt' was definitely worth it though."

Do you have any stories to share or funny and awkward moments on set that have happened so far?

I'm glad you said "stories" plural because there's many awkward and embarrassing stories to tell. The first one that comes to mind was a few weeks back when we were shooting the scene which Natalie turns Strigoi at the fight sequence. I was super into it and I was dramatically running backwards which, by the way, is really very difficult you should try it. And I just fell back straight onto my tailbone and all you see is these awkward legs in the air just flailing about. So that was pretty embarrassing especially because there all these amazing stunt people around me and I was in so much pain. So that was bad. Two days ago I was in the makeup trailer and a moth came in. A really large, large moth. This is the least badass story in the world by the way, but the moth came in and it was very, very large - there's a moth right there actually - and I got up very girly-like and my skirt just fell off completely and everyone saw. So that's me. Those are two fun ones for you.

My Vampire Academy Set Visit ^_^

"Oh, I’m sorry! Do you mind me touching your leg?"

Zoey Deutch is laughing and cheerful despite already needing to source strong coffee after an early-morning start, location shooting on Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters. I’m perched on a tall director’s chair while cast and crew take a well-earned break, flanked by Zoey and an equally smiling Lucy Fry, unable to possibly raise objection to the afore-mentioned touching of my leg; largely because these girls make it easy to feel in minutes that you’ve known them for years.
I suppose, in a way, I have.
After all, I’ve been drawing the characters they’re now playing for over three years. Rose and Lissa are incredibly alive to me and, though I don’t know Zoey and Lucy well, they’re so perfect for their roles that it’s hard to feel like a stranger.

I’d had a pretty early start myself, having stayed with friends in London (thanks Si and Emma!) so that I could get a crack-of-dawn taxi to the hotel where producer Don Murphy was staying. From there we drove to the location of the day’s shoot, somewhere outside of Oxford; the journey spent largely raving about Richelle’s (Mead, of course) amazing world and Don’s and the team’s visions for it. I’d been given the option of a visit to pinewood studios or a trip to the location shoot, which was a really tough choice. The scene I was about to watch being filmed didn’t feature all of the characters I desperately wanted to meet in the flesh (Alas, Christian’s Dominic Sherwood for one), but it did feature the core trio of Rose, Lissa and Dimitri (yes, Dimitri), and was in a fascinating location…as well as being Gabriel Byrne’s first day on set as Victor Dashkov. I’d hardly slept at all on my cocktail of excitement and nerves.

And so it was that when, on grabbing a break from a hectic day of shooting, Zoey and Lucy were kind enough to come and say ‘hi’, how could I possibly mind a little leg-touching? They, like everyone on set, had made an effort on a busy day to make me feel part of the family, and I was massively grateful.

The break was a short one, enough time for me to enthuse about how very much Rose and Lissa the girls were (and seriously, they just are! Zoey is pure energy and Lucy oozes grace), before they were summoned back on set. However, from that point on, I felt less of an outsider and more a part of the team, albeit one sat with a gaping mouth as she watched her drawings walking around and talking. How could I help it? Especially when I got my first glimpse of an in-character Danila Koslovsky as Dimitri.
You’ll have heard it through Richelle’s reports and Zoey’s tweets, but I’ll just add it again here, folks: Swoon. Off-screen, Danila was, like all of the cast, relaxed and funny, asking me about castles and historical sights he could visit on his trip in an adorable Russian accent…on screen he was pure Belikov. The transition was pretty incredible.

Vampire Academy movie set, Part 1!

I've been pretty bad about blogging, so a lot of my updates have come via social media lately. If you follow me there, you probably know the exciting news: I'm currently in London, visiting the set of the Vampire Academy movie! My journey started with a sleepless 9-hour flight from Seattle, which seemed incredibly long until I was met with awestruck looks from people who'd taken 6 hours to fly from New York and couldn't figure out how the math added up, seeing as it takes almost 5 hours to fly from Seattle to New York. Apparently, my flight headed north and flew over Canada and Greenland (a route so northerly it never got truly dark out), and that shortened global circumference led to a "speedy" flight.

But you don't care about geometry. You want to know if I met Danila Kozlovsky and if he's as handsome in person as in his pictures. The answers are yes and even more yes. But I'll get there.

Joining me in London are my literary agent Jim McCarthy and Penguin US marketing director Erin Dempsey. We arrived at the VA set in early evening yesterday, where they were filming at a local university. Producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford met us and led us straight into...a classroom at St. Vladimir's Academy. Yup, there we were sitting off to the side of a giant lecture hall filled with Moroi and dhampirs. I can't tell you what they were filming, but I will say it was a scene from the book, one that's a big favorite. It's such a favorite of mine that after watching ten takes of it, I could've watched about ten more.
