Hypable Interviews Dominic Sherwood on Playing with Fire and Kissing

Dominic Sherwood spoke with Hypable about filming Vampire Academy and his favorite scenes from the upcoming film.

The Vampire Academy releases in just weeks, February 7, and star Dominic Sherwood talked with us about playing Christian Ozera, kissing Lucy Fry and the fans.

What was it like to audition for the role and were you aware of the fanbase?
No,no,no no, I wasn’t. I missed the books they were a little out of my age range but when my agent called me and said we got you this audition based on a series of best selling books I knew I had to do research. I read the books and the fanbase is amazing but it makes me a little a nervous so I try not to think about it. There are all these people out there that already have all these ideas and images in their head. I try not to focus on that but we appreciate it so much. It’s unreal you have so many people who are supportive of the movie. We worked really hard from the actors to the crew and Weinstein Company.

How did you create the character of Christian?
I went to six auditions for the part of Christian. This is really embarrassing, I worked at Hollister just up the road from where the auditions were being held and I would do an audition one day and my agent would ring me up and say that was great but they want you to make him funnier. I would go in and do that and then I would get a phone call saying yeah that was great but they want you to go in and make him darker and make him poutier. I was like oh my god you don’t know what you want but when I got offered the role I realized that Christian was all those things.
They wanted to make sure everything was there so that is how I molded the character, just by looking back at all the audition process. Mark had this idea in his head of what he had to be and I had the script to work off of so I kind of just….smushed, I’m not really sure that is a real word but I’m going to use it.

It’s a word.

Yeah? cool, cool. So I smushed all of those elements I had, all those little pieces, I smushed those together. Three times I used that word there!

What was your favorite Christian scene to film? Is there a scene that you were nervous to film?
There is never anything I don’t want to do. If I see something in the script that is challenging that is always like my favorite bit to get to. If we have to cry or to do anything dangerous or epic those are my favorite bits to go for. But when I read the script it was the ending which I can’t talk about because I don’t want to spoil. I’ve already done that with my housemate and he was really upset but when I read that in the script I was very excited to kind of get that up on its feet but then it got rewritten. We had the ending in the script originally then Dan came up to me one day and said yeah we are not doing this anymore we’re doing this. I was like that’s awesome too! When I read the script I was like that is going to be a fun day.

What was it like to use fire as Christian’s element? 
I was so excited to get to play with fire. It was unreal. We toyed around with the idea early on with this special gel where they could set my hands on fire. I could have done all this crazy stuff with it but we ended up not using it. We had live fire on the set for the whole ending sequence but again I’m not allowed to mention but it was cool. We had fire very close to my body at one point and the stunt and safety team had gotten to know me by then and they knew I was pretty clumsy and dumb at times. They were like don’t put your hands in the fire whatever you do. I was like cool I will try to do that guys, not put my hands in open flame.

New 'Vampire Academy' clips shows Mia's true colors, Sami Gayle says she's a mean girl

Clearly, Mia is the ultimate mean girl, but she wasn’t prepared for what Rose had to offer. Those familiar with the novels know that Mia is the ultimate social climber. With Lissa and Rose returning to St. Vladimir’s, Mia wastes no time in trying to prove she belongs among the royals by basically bullying Lissa. In fact, Mia is even dating Lissa’s ex.

When Hypable spoke with Sami Gayle, who plays Mia, she said, “For me as an actress, I want to do work that is diverse, and this was a challenging role for me. I’ve never really played a girl like this who is the mean girl and popular. When I was in school I was the girl who danced, who had a couple of friends. Dying my hair blonde was great because it immediately felt I was doing something to be more popular and collaborating with the director [Mark Waters], who allowed me to just try everything in different ways, which was great. For me, in order to play a character like Mia, it can’t be flat. It has to be complex, and I found that Mia’s redeeming quality was this behavior masked her insecurities about her upbringing. I think a lot of teenagers can relate to that insecurity.”

Gayle went on to say that her favorite scene was the day she got to show her fangs because she was the first to “fang out.” In case you were wondering, it was the scene shown in this clip, which she also did her own stunts for, including taking that punch!

Hypable's Vampire Academy Set Visit Report + Recap from Fangirlishness

'Vampire Academy' set visit report - How mean can vampire girls be?

Earlier this year, Hypable visited the set of Vampire Academy for a behind the scenes look at the eagerly anticipated young adult novel-turned-movie arriving in 2014. This was our opportunity to speak to the cast and crew and find out for ourselves just how progress was going on one of our absolute favorite fandoms.

The cast were filming for a total of 8 weeks (in roughly 20 different locations), and we caught up with them on week 6 during an on-location set in the heart of London. The scenic University College London (UCL) provides the backdrop for St. Vladimir’s Academy and we were lucky enough to witness several scenes being filmed within this stunning atmosphere.

Although rarely illustrative when watching a movie for the first time, the filming process is repetitive and arduous; each scene is shot, and re-shot, and re-re-shot, then again in different camera angles. The mark of good filmmaking is attention to detail and the most striking impression we were left with after departing the set was the sheer meticulousness of every scene. The director, Mark Waters (Mean Girls), quite clearly has a very precise vision in bringing the story to life and that is to remain as loyal to Richelle Mead’s world as much as possible.

The Vampire Academy fandom is large, vibrant, enthusiastic and protective of the stories that they have taken to heart; the cast and crew seem all too aware of this and delivering a movie that above all else, is meaningful to the fandom community seems to be the overarching ambition of the team. This is an admirable endeavour and certainly left us feeling reassured.

On Set

Richelle Mead only had a few days on set but was made to feel right at home. She saw two separate scenes being filmed. One on a St. Vladimir’s set and one night set. Mead said, “The set was incredible to see. The amount of people and time that go into a movie is amazing. I don’t think the average movie viewers really appreciate that we sit and level judgement comfortably from our seats. It takes so much effort and energy to film one scene. Everyone really seemed into this project. They were passionate about the story and it was really gratifying for me.”

When asked about meeting the actors who now embody her characters, Mead exclaims that she was more star struck than anything else because they are all so beautiful. “You are surrounded by all these gorgeous people who are playing these iconic figures but at the same time they are all so personable. I have never really meet any actors so you have no idea what you are going to find but they were ordinary people. I was excited to meet them and they were excited to meet me.”

Danila Kozlovsky and Zoey Deutch

“Danila is super friendly and easy going in person. He was definitely one we were baffled by because he is just such a gorgeous man but he just talks to you. He is so relaxed and nice you almost forget he is Dimitri. Dimitri is always stoic and fighting battles and Danila is all ease and charm. When the camera is on he snaps into Dimitri, the bad ass warrior god. I saw him doing stunts scenes and that was incredible. He was out there doing all these aggressive things and throwing himself around. He took kind of a beating that night. They do have stunt people around but he and Zoey did a lot of their own stunts.”

As for Deutch, Mead feels she is the perfect fit for Rose both physically and in personality.

Richelle Mead talks Vampire Academy Blood Sisters, Dimitri and Rose with Hypable

"Today we spoke with Richelle Mead about Vampire Academy Blood Sisters. She gave us some insight to the script and our favorite characters Dimitri and Rose.

Question: I was wondering if a person or actor inspired the character of Dmitri? Or if you know any hot Russians personally?

Richelle: I’m afraid Dmitri came straight outta my brain. People have asked this and I have contemplated that maybe I should have mentioned it a long time ago, come up with a story to stick to and tell people. I can make up this great thing about maybe my car broke down and a hot Russian came and helped me fix my tire. I basically built a lot of mystique around the character. But the truth is he was born straight from me.

Question: From the actors that you have met playing the characters, which one have you met that matches your imagination from the character the best?

Richelle: I haven’t met any of the cast yet. They all are just spot on. I am so thrilled with the way that they did this casting. Everyone was just, I feel, very handpicked. The director was so conscientious about matching the characters personality with them. I think the one that most is, Gosh, it’s really hard to pick anyone I would say is the most. I mean Zoey has that vibrancy and energy that Rose has. Danila’s got that stoic Dmitri thing going down. Maybe it’s cause he’s a little older than the rest of the cast which is exactly how it should be for the books. I think the one that really knocked me out was when I saw Cameron Monaghan cast as Mason. He is just such a dead ringer for the Mason in my head which is bitter sweet for those who know Mason and the rest of the series. I look and I just think oh Cameron. But ya, they all are, I just couldn’t be more thrilled with the way it panned out.
